I have a problem with my external hdd, this is really important cos it has my dad’s files&mine too?

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

the external hard disk drive is a "Transcend StoreJet 25M "
it worked perfectly fine many times and i had it for a couple of months already.
i plugged it out always by clicking the "safely remove hardware button"
but today when i plugged it in again, there’s a pop-up that asks if i wanted to format it.
this is weird cos it never happened before
i knew that formatting it would delete everything so i clicked no
so now the thing is my dad has some of his business things in there and i have practically my entire music collection, some family pictures and others.
what should i do now?
i tried plugging into another computer and usb ports but it doesnt work
would taking it to the store i bought it from help?
i read the manual but there isnt anything on troubleshooting
i really need an answers please.
if i format it can all my data be recovered?
and are there any free data recovery software that lets you save the recovered files>

it shows up as a drive but instead of showing "Transcend(K:)" like it usually does it shows "removable disc(K:)"

1. Do not save any new file to external hdd.
2. Connect your external hdd to computer. You should see it shown as a drive letter (like H:) in Windows Explorer.
3. Download recover software, recommended one is asoftech photo recovery (simply because i was using it and it worked)
http://www.asoftech.com/apr/
4. Install and open asoftech photo recovery, select your external hdd drive, and click ‘Start’ button.
