Data Recovery – Mac?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Hi,

I’ve just erased my mac hard drive becuase it was corrupt and re-installed OSX, I did the simple erase with the disc utility.

I know the data still exists on my hard drive and will just be over written with new data when it comes along.

Is there any piece of (free) software I can use to get back my old data?

Thanks

google linux live cd- these will run from the cd and not touch the hdd

eg auditor- packed full of software as well eg forensics

My portable hard drive isnt showing on my computer?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

I have a desktop vista pc and my hard drive is not working. It makes little beep sounds when I first plug it in and then doesn’t show up on my computer. I have tried plugging into another computer and also different usb ports. Its USB and doesn’t have a separate power supply. It shows on "safely remove hardware" and when I turn my computer on it tries to boot from it but doesn’t get anywhere. Please help as this drive holds all my photos and work. I have tried data recovery software but it cant find the drive either.

I’ve had exactly the same problem and the Vista disk management wouldn’t find it either YET is made the noise and came up with "safely remove mass storage device."
You’ll need disk tools like Acronis Disk management to find the drive and format it or if you have an old boot floppy that has DOS USB support you could f-disk and format it.through that.
Another option is to remove the disk from it’s casing use a 2.5 to 3.5 adaptor if needed and plug it into your computer and let the bios find it and then you will find it in Vista disk management.
Good luck

what’s happened to my external drive?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

i’ve got a plain hard drive in one of those cheap cases… & the power cable has gotten sorta worn out & sometimes it causes it to shut down and trun back on over and over again.. it did it this afternoon when i turned it on and now i can’t get it to respond..

my computer freezes up when it’s truned on.. i can’t get into "my computer" to format it like it says it needs to be because it freezes up.. i can’t uses my data recovery software because it freezes up.. i can’t even use disk manager becuase it freezes up…… everything doesn’t work until i cut it off.. my computer won’t even shut down or start up until i turn it off..

what’s wrong and what can i do to fix it since nothing will let me do anything to it?

i’ll do anything i have to do to it just so i can recover all my stuff.

thanks for your help.

Had the same problem with an external…. it would let me access some files but most just locked up my comp, I ended up trashing it and buying a new one as it wouldn’t even let me format it through a different OS. now i use two drives one backing up the other so this wont happen again.
