can i get my data with a data recovery software?

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

Hi
one of my harddisk has got corruoted. It comes in my computer but when I open it, it asks for formatting it. i have important data on it.
can i get my data with a data recovery software?

I had a problem like that a few years ago. Suddenly, I could no longer read a hard drive which included some key information. I tried some products but to no avail, and I took it to CompUSA which charged me $99 and then couldn’t do anything either. (They were nice enough to refund my money.)

I went to another PC shop that advertised that it did data recovery among its other things (sales, service, networks, etc.), but when I got there, I realized that they didn’t have any experts in data recovery — all they had was a fancy software program. They were able to get some of the data by interfacing the drive with their computer (the problem was in a connection somewhere, but they couldn’t figure out which one), but they lost the folder structure, and halfway through, they changed their pricing structure (originally they said $99, then they called and said that they were at $600 and about halfway through!). Screw them!

Finally, I went to a company that specialized in data recovery, Cherry Systems (no, it’s not porn, that really is the name). Their minimum fee was $360, but they got every last piece of data in there, and they kept the folder structure intact so I knew where and what everything was. They had specialized techniques to get data from working hard drives, difficult hard drives, and even hard drives that could no longer be accessed. Some of their recovery methods were software and some were hardware methods, so they really dug deep.

My guess is that if you can’t read the hard drive at all, and the computer wants to reformat it, you won’t be able to get at it with a software solution. After all, the software solution requires the computer to interface with the hard drive, which it isn’t doing.

My advice is that if this is really important, take it to a real data recovery professional. You will pay (!) for this service, but don’t go to your local neighborhood PC shop which will pull some type of bait-and-switch on you.

Good luck!

How to recover data in damaged HDD?

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

I have new HDD. Only 4 months ago when I bought Seagate Barracuda 7200.11. Suddenly it can’t boot up. It says "Disk read error". Before it happens, the HDD made squeaky noise, not often, but unusual, and took unusually longer time to read/write or access than normally it does. Then I used SeaTools software to check it for errors. It returned "write cache failed to write file X to disk".
I suspect that the motor doesn’t run. If it indeed doesn’t rotate, is it possible to recover the data? Is there any cheap data recovery services in South East Asia area?
Is it possible to make it back to spin? Because, spending thousands of dollars is not that worth it.

If the drive is physically not spinning, you can send your drive to a data recovery service, it will cost hundreds or thousands of dollars depending on what the problem is.
If you are going to send it out for recovery, the less fooling around with software you do with the drive on your own, the better.

Can you totally erase a hard drive?I have heard different answers. Is there still data on the hard drive?

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

If you insert your recovery disc in a computer, is there data on the hard drive. I’ve heard once you pt data on the hard drive it can never be totally erased. Hear different responses. Thanks

Just last week I recovered 120GB from a 100GB hard drive that had been formatted a few times during its lifespan… Since I recovered more data than the drive could physically hold I assume most of the data came from prior owners.

Is it possible… Yes…
Is it likely… No… Unless it is a work computer and you are privileged with sensitive data…

It is very time consuming also… 24+ hours depending on the size of the drive…

As in this case, I was able to pull the last install complete with folders and files intact for the last owner… Just as they left them with no sorting needed… Other files that were recovered were not in any logical order but recovered.

Over 4000 MFT folders and a RAW file folder with another 42 folders that had been sorted by recovered files by type.

So… even after a recovery is complete, it could be time consuming to sort the files and folders again.

For personnal use, just use CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) which is freeware… Just install… Go to options, then settings… then click what you want… You can do NSA, DOD or other deletions of individual files, empty disk space or even the recycle bin. Depending on how in depth you get and the size of your drive, this can be time consuming also…

One advantage… If you plan on using the drive still, you do not have to reinstall anything and it would be secure from all but the most tenacious of people trying to get your stuff…

For the truly paranoid, if I need to make sure the data is gone I format the entire disk and then open the case and remove the disks… scrape the disks up good with sandpaper and then carefully break the disks… Use safety precautions though… Leather gloves and eye protection when breaking the disks… If hand sanding the disks possibly use a small mask or bandanna so as to not breathe in the dust…

THANX SSOOOO MUCH!

One of the best solutions to recover data from formatted hard drive is Easy File Undelete software:

It uses unique modern algorithms to recover files that other software either recovers incorrectly or is unable to detect.
