Windows Vista recovery error screen during booting?

Okay so when I turned on the laptop today, I get a black screen with "Windows Vista Recovery Error" written on it , it had two commands, fix system errors (recommended) and Start windows normally, but it doesn’t matter which I pick because either one brings me to a blue screen with a box to start the system recovery (which NOTE: Fails to do anything) after that it restarts and brings me back to the "Windows Vista recovery error screen" Please help! I haven’t installed any new hardware, so I know that’s not the problem, could it possibly be from the Windows updates? And how do I fix it without loosing my data and files?
