can i get my data with a data recovery software?

one of my harddisk has got corruoted. It comes in my computer but when I open it, it asks for formatting it. i have important data on it.
can i get my data with a data recovery software?
I had a problem like that a few years ago. Suddenly, I could no longer read a hard drive which included some key information. I tried some products but to no avail, and I took it to CompUSA which charged me $99 and then couldn’t do anything either. (They were nice enough to refund my money.)
I went to another PC shop that advertised that it did data recovery among its other things (sales, service, networks, etc.), but when I got there, I realized that they didn’t have any experts in data recovery — all they had was a fancy software program. They were able to get some of the data by interfacing the drive with their computer (the problem was in a connection somewhere, but they couldn’t figure out which one), but they lost the folder structure, and halfway through, they changed their pricing structure (originally they said $99, then they called and said that they were at $600 and about halfway through!). Screw them!
Finally, I went to a company that specialized in data recovery, Cherry Systems (no, it’s not porn, that really is the name). Their minimum fee was $360, but they got every last piece of data in there, and they kept the folder structure intact so I knew where and what everything was. They had specialized techniques to get data from working hard drives, difficult hard drives, and even hard drives that could no longer be accessed. Some of their recovery methods were software and some were hardware methods, so they really dug deep.
My guess is that if you can’t read the hard drive at all, and the computer wants to reformat it, you won’t be able to get at it with a software solution. After all, the software solution requires the computer to interface with the hard drive, which it isn’t doing.
My advice is that if this is really important, take it to a real data recovery professional. You will pay (!) for this service, but don’t go to your local neighborhood PC shop which will pull some type of bait-and-switch on you.
Good luck!

How to recover data in damaged HDD?
Written on November 4, 2009 at 3:19 pm, by adminI have new HDD. Only 4 months ago when I bought Seagate Barracuda 7200.11. Suddenly it can’t boot up. It says "Disk read error". Before it happens, the HDD made squeaky noise, not often, but unusual, and took unusually longer time to read/write or access than normally it does. Then I used SeaTools software to check it for errors. It returned "write cache failed to write file X to disk".
I suspect that the motor doesn’t run. If it indeed doesn’t rotate, is it possible to recover the data? Is there any cheap data recovery services in South East Asia area?
Is it possible to make it back to spin? Because, spending thousands of dollars is not that worth it.
If the drive is physically not spinning, you can send your drive to a data recovery service, it will cost hundreds or thousands of dollars depending on what the problem is.
If you are going to send it out for recovery, the less fooling around with software you do with the drive on your own, the better.

Dell Lto-3 and Lto-4 Ultrium Backup Tape Technology
Written on March 10, 2010 at 3:37 pm, by admin
Data security needs and complex regulations have transformed the data recovery and backup process and have set new standards for data archiving & data encryption. Many enterprises are making amendments to their business strategies for the management of information life cycle to fulfill the legislative instructions that dictate as how to record the information and time period for the information to be retained. It is the requirement of the service-level agreements that the companies should establish safe and secure mechanisms for end users, customers and stock holders to access the critical and valuable company records. Companies also have to ensure that at the same time the overall company infrastructure of data storage has the ability to expand cost effectively, flexibly in quick time. Disk can be ideal choice for the purpose of online data storage, but the data tape remains vital and important component of the company’s overall management strategy of information life cycle specifically for business continuance, regulatory conformity and data retention.
Dell LTO-4 backup tape products provide exceptional performance and data security tools to speed up regulatory compliance, routine backups of data center and business continuance. Its reliable features include 120Mb/s (native speed), 800GB of native space for recording data and data encryption mechanism. LTO-3 ultrium specification is also known as the super ½ inch backup tape drive technology. Each of the backup tape formats have their own disadvantages and advantage like the helical scan mechanism in the SAIT tape drives that help to lower the tape wear. Vendor lock-in is the major difference among LTO ultrium format and other tape technologies of SDLT and Super AIT. Manufacturers of other media and backup tape technologies can license LTO ultrium-3 technology from the organization of LTO program that is controlled by Certance, IBM and Hewlett-Packard. This is the major reason of the creation of LTO ultrium specification and also assisted to keep down the prices of media.
LTO ultrium3 tape drives have the capability to read tape cartridges of all the 3 tape version of LTO ultrium but can write only to the tape cartridges of second and third generation. LTO3 also features WORM technology for further assistance in the protection of valuable data. LTO ultrium-4 has the new reliable and advanced technology of encryption for addressing the data security issues. This powerful feature helps to write encrypted data to the ultrium data cartridges and the encryption keys secure the transportation and storage of sensitive and critical information. LTO-4 tape technology provides innovative data encryption tools that enable better protection of company’s valuable data. Dell LTO-4 tape format enables the organizations to perform their data backup operations at lower cost with high level of durability, performance and effectiveness. Data security needs and complex regulations have transformed the data recovery and backup process and have set new standards for data archiving & data encryption.
As the data security issues are becoming more prominent, therefore LTO ultrium program is continuously providing innovative and efficient backup storage solutions according to the demands of storage managers and security standards. Capacity of the LTO ultrium4 reaches 1600GB and 240MB per second of transfer rate with assumed data compression of 2:1. It also has the WORM feature and is also available in the LTO-3 tape format. This feature offers cost effective mechanism for storage of information in non-rewritable arrangement for addressing the compliance needs. Dell LTO-4 tape format enables the organizations to perform their data backup operations at lower cost with high level of durability, performance and effectiveness.

Managed Storage Services Online – Online Data Backup Service Versus Tape Backup
Written on March 10, 2010 at 3:37 pm, by admin
Using a backup service provider allows you to use their offsite managed backup service. Essentially, it will let you make a backup from a local computer to a network. Any business that needs to backup and restore data fast can benefit from a managed backup service.
You might be wondering why you shouldn’t use tapes, since they’ve been used for data backup for a long time.
Studies have recently shown that recovery methods based on tape can be prone to failure or complications and they’re not that cost effective either. On the other hand, managed storage services can be cost worthy, flexible, fast, reliable and secure.
There is another possible disadvantage of tape backup solutions, and that’s the human error probability, which can happen during tape transportation or rotation.
Below you can read the story of a Connecticut bank that happened in January.
A bank from Bridgeport, Connecticut called the People’s Bank, lost a tape during transportation, which contained personal data of around 90,000 customers. It contained their names, social security numbers, addresses and account numbers. It was sent originally to Pennsylvania. If something like this happens to your business, it can be disastrous, and not only for you, but for your customers as well.
Another case was that of Bank of America, which lost data of 1.2 million clients in 2005, according to The Privacy Rights Clearinghouse.
These data protection solutions that service providers offer are multi-faceted. You can use their services to reduce your risks of misplacement, theft, human error, malicious attacks or hardware failure.
The provider of remote data backup recovery services automatically encrypts, compresses and transmits the data to a data center that is highly secure.
The remote data backup service vs the ownership cost of tapes is also a factor that will make the difference for businesses.
In a large enterprise, the costs of tape backup is influenced by software, hardware, staffing, support and media. Another cost is having a second location to store data tapes, and it will also need software, hardware, staffing, support and communications. All in all, the total cost of ownership for a tape backup solution can be huge.
You no longer need media or shelved media when you use a remote backup service provider. You don’t need to hire as much personnel either, to take care of the tapes and to maintain the systems.
Switching to a service such as this can reduce your expenses by up to 70%, and you would also eliminate the chances of a human error.
